No.22 Spring 2004
Announcements

Welcome to the SPRING 2004 edition of the WHOLY LIVING newsletter. We just returned from a whirlwind tour of Orlando, Pensacola, the Carolinas, Washington DC, Philadelphia, New York City, and Boston. Those cities present quite a culture shock to these Palmerites!! But Praise GOD, He provided a means of safely maneuvering through each one, visiting the main 'attractions.' Once again, we know there's NO place like HOME!!

1 - To have the order here by mid-May, please place your order in the online store or return the printable mail-order form to me by APRIL 20th, with at least half the payment. We'll host another BOSCH II CLASS here on April 16th at 10:00am, demonstrating all the major Bosch attachments along with the brand new COOKIE PADDLES!! Learn how to utilize your machine, as we whip up a batch of bread, an angel food cake, quiche, blender mayo, a fruit smoothie, and a stew. (It's a riot, just watching me!!) First timers, experienced chefs, and budding homemakers all welcome.

2 - NEW ITEMS!!
If you don't mind 'putting all your eggs in one basket,' check out THE FAMILY GRAIN MILL and ROLLER/FLAKER MILL. Both components fit on the Bosch base like the MEAT GRINDER using a special adapter. Like the Ultramill & the Nutrimill, they also feature a LIFETIME WARRANTY. Park the Bosch on its back & attach one of these marvels. Each one has a 5 cup hopper for continuous milling, is dust free, quiet, & efficient!! The FAMILY GRAIN MILL adjusts from fine to course with the twist of a knob. A couple of things to weigh out before purchasing ~~~ Do you want to put depend solely on the Bosch? With the automatic transmission, it's pretty hard to destroy a Bosch. I don't know what to say. This is a new concept to me, but one worth trying if space is a consideration. Just detach the mill & drop it into a drawer. After I experiment more with them, I'll add more info. The FAMILY GRAIN MILL processes all the grains, even corn and beans, as well as those nutritious seeds that stop up the high speed mills. The other thought is to mill plenty of flour to begin with. Otherwise you have to remove the bowl to set up the mill.   The ROLLER/FLAKER MILL produces freshly rolled grains for flavorful cereals, granola, cookies, or the OATMEAL CAKE featured on the recipe page. One more gadget for us 'do it ourselves'-types. It would be handy instead of buying the huge bags of rolled oats & 7-Grain. I am very excited about these new MILLS. Many people like the advantage of one machine to do it all. Others want both machines. There is a place for all three mills ~~~ THE ULTRAMILL, THE NUTRIMILL & THE FAMILY GRAIN MILL. Choose the one that's right for you. I think the most important thing is to use whatever one you have!!!!!!!!

3 - Another exciting milestone for me is the creation of the Wholy Living web site, wholyliving.com. It's been a goal & dream of mine for years & now we're just a click away. On it you'll find the current newsletter, product information, our story, Wholy Thoughts, Wholy Hints, the order form, & recipes. The past newsletters will be combined in the hints, recipes, & thoughts section. Families who want to get started will find the Why Whole Grains and the Getting Started sections very informative. Please browse around, share it with friends, & be patient as we begin & get things rolling. Feel free to share your suggestions and corrections.

4 - How about sharing your favorite recipes that we can post on the web site sometime in the future? Please send recipes, hints & proven ideas. I'd like the recipes to be somewhat healthy, without the usual processed foods, throwing a couple of packages together for dinner type. Share your successes and favorites, even vegetarian & wheat-free recipes. We might feature them at a later date in our online recipe section. You can also include a couple of sentences about your creation.

5 - CUSTOMIZED APRONS ~~~ Check the web site for pictures of our samples. We chose three colors with three themes. You choose from an Alaskan apron, a Patriotic apron or a Kitchen scene. Each hand made design features colorful machine embroidery on the front panel & the pocket. . .

6 - COOKIE PADDLES!!!! I am SOOOOOOO excited about this new development from Kitchen Resources. They configured a replacement for the cookie whips, a solid plastic paddle that fits on the whip drive piece. Much studier & efficient than the former cookie/batter whips. Throw in butter right out of the fridge without worrying. A GREAT MOTHER'S DAY GIFT!! They even have a lifetime guarantee!

7 - A couple of prices increased slightly, due to shipping & vendor pricing, but the EnerSoy & Quench Drink Mixes reduced drastically. Sorry to say, because of the Euro, the machine prices increased. However, take a look at our Mother's Day Specials.

8 - May the Pillsbury Doughboy meet a similar fate in all your homes: It is with the saddest heart that we must pass on the following news. Please join us in remembering a great icon of the entertainment community. ~~~ The Pillsbury Doughboy died yesterday of a yeast infection and complications from repeated pokes in the belly. He was 71. Doughboy was buried in a lightly greased coffin. Dozens of celebrities turned out to pay their respects, including Mrs. Buttersworth, Hungry Jack, Betty Crocker, the Hostess Twinkies, and Cap'n Crunch. ~~~ The graveside was piled high with flours. Pop Tart delivered the eulogy and lovingly described Doughboy as a man who never knew how much he was kneaded. Doughboy rose quickly in show business, but his later life was filled with turnovers. He was not considered a very 'smart' cookie, wasting much of his dough on half-baked schemes. Despite being a little flaky in his youth and a crusty old man, he was considered a roll model for millions. ~~~ He is survived by his wife, Play Dough; two children, John Dough and Jane Dough; plus the bun they had in the oven. The funeral was held at 3:50 for about 20 minutes.

9 - Again this year, our IDEA families will find us only in the handout sacks.

Wholy Hints

1 - Have you been ill this past winter, wondering why your body won't heal? Check your diet. Do you eat processed cereals, fast foods, prepackaged dinners, or store bought breads? All these contain processed foods. For the manufacturers to preserve flavor & taste, they strip away most of the calcium, iron, magnesium, potassium, Vitamin E & B, and Folic acid, anything that will go rancid, or look 'brown.' Even so-called 'enrichment,' can't duplicate the intricate balance of all the nutrients working together as God created them. Lab mice fed box cereal developed anemia, fatty livers & high blood pressure. Fat-free cereal contains no germ with its beneficial oils. Don't be fooled, the whole grain equals much more than the sum of the components. God designed our bodies to eat whole foods, like He fashioned them. Our bodies cannot efficiently use processed foods & sends us warning signs, like bloating, fatigue, headaches, & allergies. Besides, milling your own is SOOO much more convenient & CHEAP!!! Get back to your mill & Bosch & watch how much better your family feels.

2 - Do you love the wheat bread, but it's not so wonderful on your stomach? Try mixing your freshly milled flour & water overnight in the Bosch bowl along with 1 T of lemon juice per loaf of bread. Then continue on the next day as usual for your recipe. Let me know your results. This is a suggestion from our new book, NOURISHING TRADITIONS.

3 - Quick, DELICIOUS, low cal blender breakfast - 2 c milk, 1 banana, 2 scoops VANILLA SUMMIT EnerSoy, 1 scoop Mango-Peach, KICKER Qwench - WOW!! This fills me up & tickles the taste buds!!

4 - FOCUS ON KAMUT. . . An Egyptian long yellow grain, Kamut is recognized as a versatile & essential poly-functional grain. Loaded with phyto-chemicals, which protects against cancer & heart disease. Kamut makes delicious, SOFT bread, a perfect substitute for wheat. Check out our new informative kamut book, Kamut, Ancient Food for a Healthy Future.

5 - A great substitute for oil in quick breads, pancakes & the oatmeal cake recipe (featured in this issue), try our Dried Apple Rings. Simply cut the rings with scissors or use the food processor to dice them, then rehydrate in water on the stove or microwave. Next, I return them to the food processor to make applesauce.

6 - I'm too cheap to purchase an expensive facial scrub, so I blended about 2 T flax seeds & 2 T oatmeal in my Bosch Coffee Mill. I keep it in a small covered container in the shower, adding my regular cleanser to 1 t or so of the mix. My face feels smooth & I think it does a great job. (The tight wad strikes again.)

ALASKA STATE HISTORY!!! Actually Mat Valley history. Call Maxine DeVilbiss (745-3483) for a copy of her HOMESTEADING IN ALASKA, THE STORY OF WOLVERINE FARM. Learn about the trials of developing one of Alaska's most productive farms that was started after their arrival in Alaska in 1956. Her narrative gives me a new appreciation for pioneer farming. You'll be AMAZED!! Maxine also chronicled her life with Billy, their Korean-born, adopted son. BILLY'S STORY, A 35-YEAR JOURNEY WITH AUTISM, will keep you laughing & crying as she describes Billy's pitiful condition when he came to them and her trials teaching him without knowing much about his condition. What an awesome mom she truly is!!! ($8 for Billy's Book & $10 for the Homesteading book.)

I found this book as a close out, so I may only be able to sell what I have on hand. KAMUT, ANCIENT FOOD FOR HEALTHY FUTURE by Betty Kamen. . .$9

Wholy Thoughts

In the beginning, God created the Heavens and the Earth and populated the earth with broccoli, cauliflower, spinach, green, yellow and red vegetables of all kinds, so man and woman would live long and healthy lives. Then using God's great gifts, Satan created Ben and Jerry's and Krispy Creme Donuts. Satan said, "You want chocolate with that?" And man said "Yea," and woman said, "and another one with sprinkles."

And they gained 10 pounds. And God created the healthy yogurt that woman might keep the figure that man found so fair. And Satan brought forth white flour from the wheat, and sugar from the cane and combined them. And woman went from size 6 to size 14. So God said, "Try my fresh green salad." And Satan presented Thousand-Island Dressing and garlic toast on the side. And man and woman unfastened their belts following the banquet. God then said, "I have sent you heart healthy vegetables and olive oil in which to cook them." And Satan brought forth deep fried fish and chicken-fried steak so big it needed its own platter. And man gained more weight and his cholesterol went through the roof. God then brought running shoes so that his children might lose those extra pounds. And Satan gave cable TV with a remote control so man would not have to get up to change the channels. And man and woman laughed and cried before the flickering light and gained pounds.

Then God brought forth the potato, naturally low in fat and brimming with nutrition. And Satan peeled off the healthful skin and sliced the starchy center into chips and deep-fried them. And man gained pounds. God then gave lean beef so that man might consume fewer calories and still satisfy his appetite. And Satan created McDonald's and its 99-cent double cheeseburger. Then he said, "You want fries with that?" And man replied, "Yea! and super size 'em." And Satan said, "It is good." And man went into cardiac arrest. God sighed and allowed quadruple bypass surgery. Then Satan created HMOs.

Satan has a deceptive substitute for everything God creates. Instead of the Resurrection, Satan focuses on the rabbit. For the Savior, Satan sent Santa (notice the rearrangement of letters). Instead of salvation by Grace, "for by grace are ye saved through faith and that not of yourselves it is the gift of God not of works, lest any man should boast." (Eph 2:8-9) Satan imposes works as the way to Heaven through baptism, good deeds, keeping the law, & church membership. "For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord." (Rom 6:23) "For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved." (Rom 10:13)

Wholy Yours,
Margaret Loew
