No.24 Spring 2005
Announcements

1 - ORDERING INFORMATION - For the SPRING 2005 order, please have the order form returned to me by Monday, April 25th. Lord willing, the grain will arrive during the week of May 23rd. Like the fall order, be sure to take advantage of the 10% savings on the consumable side of your order form by meeting the April 25th deadline.

2 - GRAIN DEPOTS - We are excited to welcome on board several families who willing consented to disburse the grain when it arrives. This is the first time for each one disbursing grain. Pray it all goes smoothly!!! Expect a call from them & then promptly pick up your order. They probably would accept any help with this huge task also. Lifting, dividing up 5#er bags, organizing ... it all takes time & muscle. We are excited to have a new depot in the Copper Valley area. Katie Helkenn will service Valdez as well. This takes a tremendous load off me. Thank you for your cooperation and patience.

3 – BREAD CLASSES - Let’s do one here in Palmer on Tuesday, April 12th at 6:30 pm. Call for directions - 745-5639. Bring a pizza topping and a pie plate for take & bake cinnamon rolls.

4 – IDEA CURRICULUM FAIR - With a little grandson due during this time, April will be a flexible month for us. If he arrives a little early, I’ll attend the fairs. If not, any volunteers to man the table? I’ve paid my admission fees to participate in all 4 fairs. Here’s the IDEA schedule:

FAIRBANKS Friday & Saturday, April 15 & 16
ANCHORAGE Monday & Tuesday, April 18 & 19
SOLDOTNA Wednesday, April 20
JUNEAU Thursday, April 21

In conjunction with each fair, we’ll plan to do a bread class while we’re in town. Bring a pie plate for take & bake cinnamon rolls & a pizza topping. FAIRBANKS – Friday, the 15TH, 7 pm at Fairhill Community Church of God, 101 City Lights Blvd. Contact Debbie Seeger, 474-4672. SOLDOTNA - Thursday 10 am Val Turner’s home, 262-4716. Janet Dunivin will manage the Juneau Fair and set her own schedule. I will at least have flyers in the handout sacks. It was great seeing all you APHEA Convention attendees.

5 – BOSCH & MILL SPECIAL SALES - Mother’s Day is the usual time for sale prices from the company. Check the website for specials about that time. I will try to also communicate them via email. The ongoing special is --- purchase a Bosch Universal and a Nutrimill at regular price (which includes shipping in the US) and receive $50 credit toward an attachment, the bread class CD, a small dough enhancer, and a yeast.

6 – WHAT’S NEW??? Our church sings Scripture songs every Sunday morning. Ruth recorded many of these KJV Scripture Songs as well as some new ones. Let OH HOW LOVE I THY LAW minister to your soul!!! The 450-watt COMPACT BOSCH that was so popular last fall, is now available with a continuous slicer/shredder, a blender, accessory tray, and a Stainless Steel Bowl. $269 THE FAMILY GRAIN MILL AND FLAKER MILL is another exciting addition to our line. If your counter space is limited, you might want to consider this mill that attaches to the Bosch like the meat grinder. Lay the Bosch on its back and attach this mill where the bowl mounts. When you have milled enough flour, just detach and throw it in a drawer. Like the Nutrimill, the Family Grain mill produces very fine to very coarse flour. Also available is the Flake mill for fresh rolled oats, etc. NATURAL PEANUT BUTTER, family size . . . The peanut butter addition last fall went so well, I’ll offer the 35# family size pail like we purchase. This one is natural, not homogenized, no sugar or shortening, just nuts & salt, creamy or crunchy. We store it in the cool root cellar, dipping out as our jar empties. MOLASSES – You can have your choice of Blackstrap or Sweet Table.

7 – PRICE DECREASE – Amazing but true!!! Swiss Whey actually decreased by $10/ pail!!! Now it is even more economical. Sorry about the jump prices of other items!!! I try hard to hold the line on prices.

Wholy Hints

1 – Ever heard of ROMAN MEAL??? Here’s the story: When determining the value of whole grains, in the diet, one need only look back into the history of the Roman Empire. Roman soldiers were fed a daily ration of meal comprised of wheat, rye, flax and bran. Early nutritionists and Generals understood that grains provided all the daily needs of a fighting man, provided the most amount of energy per pound of food, and could be stored and moved most efficiently to the point of consumption. It’s even more exciting to know that when the soldiers were successful in battle, securing an area or village with cows, goats, & pigs, that they would shun the prospects of fresh meat & refused to eat it. They became so reliant on the power of their daily ration of grain meal, and its vitality, that they would not consume other foodstuffs, even when they were available. They feared that other foods would make them sluggish, mentally weaker & less likely to succeed in battle. The Roman Meal story is a favorite of ours, because it reminds us that the same simple heritage of grains, in the diet that we are rediscovering in modern times, was held in the highest regard by fighting men 2000 years ago. (From the Wheat Montana Journal) I tried it the last two mornings with dried apples. Those soldiers had great taste buds!!

2 — In order to preserve freshness, always store yeast and wheat germ in the freezer or frig whether opened or not.

3 - When considering purchasing a plastic container for grain or any food storage, look for the letters HDPE and/or NFS on the container. This stands for ‘high density polyurethane’ and ‘National Food Safe Seal.’ You can then be assured they are food grade.

4 – SUNFLOWER SEEDS –Super Snack ~ These raw seeds taste SOOOO good by just roasting them on a cookie sheet for 15 minutes with a little garlic salt or other seasoning, store in an airtight container. Another super snack is the Banana Chips or make your own trail mix with dates, almonds, sunflower seeds, diced apricots, & don’t forget those milk chocolate chips.

5 – WEDDING GIFT IDEAS --- BOSCH Toaster, Bosch Coffee Mill, Compact Bosch Mixer --- GRADUATION GIFT IDEAS --- Ruth’s CDs, America’s God & Country Encyclopedia of Quotes, Hearth & Home

6 – Going RVing or camping this summer? want to take along your fresh bread? Darlene Bloom recommends baking your bread ahead of time in a wide mouth quart jar. As soon as it comes out of the oven, seal it with a lid & ring. Darlene offers this variety in the Wholy Recipes section.

7 – Grow grain for a pretty ‘homemade’ fall bouquet. Throw some grain on your soil & harvest the stocks in late August. I have a vaseful of ‘gold’ sitting in my window.

8 - Many have asked about freezing bread. I just visited with a lady who makes 30+ loaves at a time, freezing them. She says they are excellent!!!

9 - Vegetable stew blend makes a wonderful quick meal. Add a handful while cooking your rice along with some meat and something like Yoshida's Sweet & Sour sauce. Throw it in soup or stew for more nutrition and color.

10 — Does dough go into the center post of your Bosch bowl? A free DOUGH GUARD will solve this problem. Just ask for it on your order form.

11— A sign in a doctor’s off ice warned, “DEATH BEGINS IN THE COLON” The typical American diet takes 92 hours to pass through ‘the digestive system. That seems like a golden opportunity for colon cancer to develop. Include PLENTY of flax and whole grains in your diet, to ‘keep on going regularly and frequently!!

12—Please notify us of any email or snail mail address changes!!!

Make a batch of Brownie Mix. Also try this SCRUMPTIOUS chocolate sauce recipe. Use is for dipping apples or strawberries or bananas. Serve over ice cream or pound cake or whole wheat angel food cake.
The Bookshelf

Christine Downs, the Family Grain Mill distributor, wrote a wonderful, spiraled cookbook called COOKING & BAKING WITH FRESH GROUND FLOUR. It contains wonderful information about Whole Grains as well as recipes for your typical baked goods, main entrees, soups, salads, and a great section on gluten free recipes. Since she sells the flake mill, Cris uses a wide variety of freshly rolled grains in her recipes, too. For a fresh insight on our ‘favorite subject,’ pick up a copy.
