There shall be showers of blessings - remember the old time hymn? We feel
like God just opened the windows of Heaven, raining down heaps of blessings on
us undeserving servants of His. Sunday, September 23rd, our congregation
worshipped in our new location, 1801 E. 68th, between Lake Otis & the Seward
access road. Praise the Lord!! He showed Himself strong on our behalf, enabling
us to purchase this property with a beautiful building and gymnasium on 4.5
acres. Carlile blessed us as well by finding the lost Wheat Montana order
in their repair yard. Praise the Lord, it remained in perfect condition, just a
smidge dusty. Many of you helped us ‘unload’ it into your pantries. Thank
you!!! God is so good all the time. We just thank and Praise His wonderful
Name!!!

order form by FRIDAY, October 19th. Lord willing, we’ll have our pallets in
Alaska, ready for pick up close to Thanksgiving. Like previous orders, be sure
to take the 10% savings on consumables by meeting the October 19th deadline.
For snail mail customers, please return your order form to the team member in charge
of your nearest grain depot. We’ll all do our best to work together to make
this as smooth and efficient as possible. We are grateful for the stressful but
successful spring order. I hope everyone received everything that was ordered.
Our regional dealers did a great job. If you order on line, please request your
preferred destination on the check out page.
2 ~ BREAD CLASSES ~ WOW!!! We are excited!!! We can share with you the newest member of the Bosch Kitchen Machines, the Universal Plus!!! You can hear all about it at a bread class. They’ll be available by November. Let’s do a class MONDAY, October 8th at 6:30 pm here in our home on Lazy Mountain and THURSDAY, October 11th at 1:30 pm in Anchorage. Katie Matson graciously offered her home - 12530 Snowbird, 349-1995. From the New Seward turn east onto Huffman, then right onto Northern Raven and then right onto Snowbird. Go to the 3rd house on the right. This is a great opportunity to see a bunch of new products and get re-inspired to use your Mill & Bosch. Bring a friend & share all the wonderful advantages of whole grain bread baking. We will make pizza, hot cereal & cinnamon rolls along with the bread. Bring a pizza topping & a pie plate to take home your own batch of rolls.
3 ~ LURCH BAKING CLASS, MONDAY, October 15th, here at our house. We’re excited to introduce our LURCH silicone baking & utensil line. Read all about it in What’s New? Using the Quiche Pan, the Muffin Pan, the Bundt Pan, & the LaBomba Bowl, we’ll feast on broccoli cheese quiche, iced cranberry bundt cake, & pumpkin pecan muffins. I’ll also demonstrate how our new stick blender makes nut butter and ‘ice cream’ from skim milk & frozen fruit, perfect for diabetics. Cost is $5/family.
Please call to confirm a spot for any classes ~ 745-5639.
4 ~ PRICING ~ As you might have noticed the cost of bread and milk has increased significantly. Even with slightly higher grain prices, 50 loaves of bread costs $65 using PG, olive oil, SAF, our honey, & dough enhancer. That’s just $1.30 a loaf. Even if nutrition was not a factor, homemade bread is still the best deal going!!! FYI ~One 50# bag of Prairie Gold makes 50 regular loaves of bread.
5 -~ GLUTEN FREE ITEMS ~ We enjoyed a wonderful response from you all with this line. John & I visited their facilities in SLC. With such a wide variety of products & sizes, it’s hard for us to deal with it all & for Blue Chip Group to fill our orders on time. We came to the conclusion that it would be more efficient & cost effective for you to purchase straight from BCG on their website. They can mail the smaller size packages to you. I will continue carrying the 25# bags. Contact BCG at http://bluechipgroup.net/products/gfretail.pdf or call 800-878-0099. These mixes are very convenient, but a better way would be to pick up a Compact Bosch with its own grain mill & make your own mixes. We have Compacts for as little as $120. Add the grain mill attachment for $70, and get started with your own mixes.
6 ~ WIN A NEW BOSCH UNIVERSAL PLUS by sharing your story in the Kitchen Resource “IT’S STILL WORKING’ contest. Anyone who purchased a Bosch Universal between 1951—1995 is eligible to participate. Complete the entry form including why you love your Bosch and a brief description of the age and condition of your Bosch mixer. Ask me for an entry form ASAP. Drawing held Nov 12th.
7 ~ APHEA CONVENTION ~ Alaska Private and Home Educators Association announces its annual convention. Save April 18 & 19, 2008 for an inspiring weekend. Richard “Little Bear” Wheeler is the keynote speaker with Andrew Pudewa & Jay L. Wile presenting their material. If you have not ever attended, make plans for this wonderfully inspiring Christian Convention. You will be so glad you did. Further details to come in the spring newsletter.
8 ~ Mark your October 08 calendar for our Wholy Living 15th Birthday Party. More details to come.

LURCH SILICONE MOLDS ~ BAKING PANS ~ FLEXI ROYAL BAKING MOLDS
“Silicone...looks like plastic...stay away from it.” My first impression
too. However, silicone is a very natural product made of sand and water. After
seeing it, smelling it, and using it, I’m ready to take the plunge. I think
you will be excited too!!! Eleven years ago, three German brothers created the
Lurch line, thinking they could ’build a better mouse trap.’ Lurch accounts
for 40% of the European silicone mold and utensil sales, quite an impressive
feat. They chose the Gecko Mascot because of its cleanliness. What sets this
apart from the lesser quality?’ I’m glad you asked … Lurch products are
100% cross linked platinum...Maximum nonstick surface (there goes our Vegalene
sales)...Heat resistant up to 500 degrees...Cold resistant up to minus 76
degrees..Microwave-safe...Fruit-acid resistant..Dishwasher safe...Neutral
scent...Hypoallergenic (zinc and nickel-free) Highly stable yet flexible through
Noditec bands...15 year guarantee. You can crush them, twist them, stomp on them
without damage!! We have it all from pumpkin cake molds to springform pans, from
a mini tart mold to a teddy bear pan, a soccer ball pan to happy birthday
letters and numbers. Need a shaker bottle, salad spinner, apple peeler, a 5 in 1
grater for an RV? How about a flexible funnel for hot or cold or baking mats
(reusable parchment paper)?

I love the mats for rolling out rolls!!! How about a
spiral vegetable cutter? To TOP it all off, check out our 18th century Crown
Molds. These innovative brothers purchased the original copper molds from twenty
seven German castles. They transformed the copper molds into LURCH Flexi Royal
Baking Molds. We have the Blankenburg, Marienburg, and Luneburg molds available
this year. Expect three each year, if you want to collect the whole set. Any
homeschoolers studying European history? Create a crowning royal dainty with one
of these molds. The complete Lurch line has sixty seven different items. I’ll
put a few on the website or the back of the order form. To view the complete
line, go to www.kitchenresource.com.
To order, just name the item in the comment
section of the online order form or enclose a note with the mail in order form.
I’ll offer 15% savings on all Lurch items through Christmas.

2 QUART STORAGE/CANNING JARS

Storage quandry? Try our 2-quart canning jars with lids & rings - case of 6 just $12.50.
Also, try the one gallon size glass jars with lids - case of 4, just $20
1 ~ NUTRIMILL ~ The knob on the back of your Nutrimill holds the base and the motor together. Remove the knob and lift the motor off the base. You may clean the base periodically, even submerging it in hot sudsy water. Just wipe off the outside of the motor housing, of course! What are the dials for?? The top dial on the Nutrimill controls the motor speed and the bottom one the texture of the flour. The general rule of thumb is to set the top speed control to the left (9 o’clock) for fine to medium flour and to the right (3 o’clock) for coarse. As usual the bottom dial should be set at noon for fine to medium flour and all the way to the right for coarse flour or when grinding beans and corn. To expedite milling corn and beans, drop one handful at a time into the hopper. For a germade type hot cereal, try milling your grain on slow speed, coarse setting. Cook like cream of wheat.
2 ~ BOSCH UNIVERSAL ~ Hints for a ’healthy’ Bosch — After washing your Bosch bowl, don’t set the bowl right back on the base. Water will drip down from the center post into the motor. I place the round center lid over the motor mount and place the bowl on the lid. Then the water drains onto the lid instead of into the motor. DOUGH GUARD — Always remove the dough guard when using the whisks or cookie paddles. Only use the dough guard with the dough hook!! BLENDER — If you combine liquids and frozen fruit or ice cubes in the blender, ’jog on the M’ several times first, then go to speed 3. This will keep the drive piece in good shape.
3 ~ CALL FIRST!!! PLEASE DO NOT TRY TO FIX YOUR OWN MILL OR BOSCH, if it malfunctions. Call 800-mybosch and ask for Dave. He really likes Alaskans. The mill has a lifetime warranty, so Dave will fix it. Also, only mill grain and beans, not oily food like seeds or rolled grains.
4 ~ If you’re going to eat hot dogs, wrap those puppies in some bread dough & bake like pigs in a blanket. Maybe some of that good fiber will carry away the nasties from the dogs!
5 ~ If you must remove the blender blades, the lid is the perfect wrench for the job. Remove the funnel, set it on the underside of the blades & turn. Be sure the gasket sits properly before replacing the blades. I rarely remove mine, just use bleach water periodically.
6 ~ Mill 1-2 cups Great Northern beans along with your grain for bread. You’ll add protein & fiber for a wonderful, light dough. Make savory rolls by sautéing onions & garlic in olive oil. Pour over rolled out dough, sprinkle with Italian seasoning, grated cheese or use your imagination. Roll up like cinnamon rolls, slice, let rise & bake. Delicious compliment to winter soups, pasta dishes or a salad.
7 ~ An article appeared in the ADN in January stating:
Whole grains and whole-grain foods are one of the top food trends, according the
NPD Group, a marketing company in Port Washington, NY. Studies are linking
greater whole-grain consumption with reduced risk of heart disease and Type 2
diabetes. Research also shows that people who eat more whole grains, and fewer
refined grains gain less weight over time. Did you realize eating whole-grains
is a ‘trendy’ lifestyle? Trendy or not, it gets us eating God’s way, one
of the healthiest & cheapest ways to feed your family. What those writers
probably didn’t realize is that our bodies are the Temple of the Holy Spirit.
When we nourish them properly, we are being good stewards, fit for the Master’s
use. We live with the choices we make. Over the years, good nutrition pays
bountiful benefits. A diet rich in fiber reduces blood cholesterol (especially
the LDL), cleans the digestive tract, and helps prevent atherosclerosis.
High-fiber diets also help prevent colon, prostate, rectal, intestinal, and
breast cancer. Continue to make bread, prepare a whole-grain breakfast, and take
a few minutes to whip up healthy snacks for this Christmas. Your body will feel
energetic all winter long. Some ladies hoard their grain, saving it for a
special occasion. Please realize it is much more economical and healthful to use
it daily & replenish your grain supply. Don’t buy dead, white bread and
other preprocessed junk food!!!
8 ~ Cute Fall Decorations ~ Fill a ˝ pint canning jar w/ popcorn or whole
corn for a perfect candle holder. Tie raffia or ribbon around the mouth of the
jar.
Cut a whole in the center of a mini fake pumpkin. Poke in a flower pick &
add a small ribbon.
The Delicious Rescue of Botched Batches of Bread
What started as an innocent home school project last year has become a thriving business for my 11 and 12 year old sons. My goal was to have them comfortable baking bread by the end of the school year. Within a month they had become independent bakers and even had the audacity to surpass their mother’s loaves as they experimented with the basic elements of kneading, water and baking times. In the midst of this flour frenzy there have been a few casualties. Even better than turning lemons into lemonade is the ability to turn dry, flat bread into a flavorful treat. We thought we’d share our two favorite recipes with you for bread pudding and croutons. These are so yummy you will never cry over botched bread again. (Thank you for these great ideas for our bread-baking mistakes, Lalena!!!)
PS- if you don’t have time to deal with your bread at the time of baking- just cube it, put in a Ziplock bag and throw in the freezer.
Margaret’s note - We use drier bread for grilled cheese sandwiches, garlic bread or French toast. Then spread hot fresh bread with our yummy natural peanut butter!! Doesn’t get any better than that!!

Croutons |
| From Lalena Leigh in Fairbanks | There are many ways to make croutons- this is the least time intensive with the best taste. They come out better than potato chips- and they are healthy and inexpensive. We make big batches at a time and store them in a ziplock in the freezer. They are a wonderful fix for those salty snack cravings. |
Anita Hill sent this as an email. Just last March, our church ladies surprised our Pastor’s wife with an apron birthday party. Betty reigns as the queen of Aprons. You should see her extraordinary collection. She’s rarely seen without one!! (Thanks, Anita!)
Aprons
I don't think our kids know what an apron is. The principal use of Grandma's
apron was to protect the dress underneath, but along with that, it served as a
potholder for removing hot pans from the oven. It was wonderful for drying
children's tears, and on occasion was even used for cleaning out dirty
ears. From the chicken coop, the apron was used for carrying eggs, fussy
chicks, and sometimes half-hatched eggs to be finished in the warming
oven. When company came, those aprons were ideal hiding places for shy
kids. And when the weather was cold, grandma wrapped it round her
arms. Those big old aprons wiped many a perspiring brow, bent over the hot wood
stove. Chips and kindling wood were brought into the kitchen in that
apron. From the garden, it carried all sorts of vegetables. After the peas
had been shelled, it carried out the hulls.
In the fall, the apron was used to bring in apples that had fallen from the
trees. When unexpected company drove up the road, it was surprising how much
furniture that old apron could dust in a matter of seconds. When dinner was
ready, Grandma walked out onto the porch, waved her apron, and the men knew it
was time to come in from the fields to dinner. It will be a long time before
someone invents something that will replace that "old-time apron" that
served so many purposes.
REMEMBER:
Grandma used to set her hot baked apple pies on the window sill to cool.
Her granddaughters set theirs on the window sill to thaw.
Thus saith the LORD, Stand ye in the ways, and see, and ask for the old paths,
where is the good way, and walk therein, and ye shall find rest for your souls.
But they said, We will not walk therein. Jeremiah 6:16
There IS a living God.
He has SPOKEN in His Word.
He MEANS what He says.
He will DO all that He promises.
